I enjoyed the show but it was totally not appropriate for a Super Bowl halftime show. There are 11 year old kids who watch the Super Bowl. Strip club style dancing and lyrics about dick, pussy, ass, doggy style etc. are grossly inappropriate for a mainstream event. It's a sign of how pornified and degraded US culture has become. Because actually in Puerto Rico before the gangsta rap of the 90s it would have been unacceptable. So that part is not Puerto Rican culture. The visuals were Puerto Rican. Tito Puente is Puerto Rican culture; obscene rap music is manufactured misogyny for sale in the capitalist USA.

Scarlet, thank you for your detailed comment. I lament the “pornification” of everything in today’s culture, and it’s rampant across the globe! I have often wondered how families with young kids police their exposure to it, not just in football halftime shows, but virtually everywhere.

I’m reminded of so much about my childhood growing up in Puerto Rico by the sets, costumes, colors, music, and vibrant celebration that was everywhere in Bad Bunny’s halftime show, but you are right—the culture of today (not just there, but everywhere) now includes so much flagrant sexual content that it would have been unacceptable in the time of Tito.

This stretches well beyond entertainment. We are living in a time where civility and restraint have degraded such that we have a sexual predator and flagrant con-man stealing from us in the White House, and a fair amount of the voting public wanted this for us.

I don’t have a lot of choice these days about whether there will be explicit sexuality in entertainment, because there is no avoidance tactic that is expansive enough to screen it all out. But when my daughter was growing up, I went to extremes to avoid subjecting her to misogyny and to pressure to see herself as a commodity. I limited her TV time and monitored the programs she could watch. I kept magazines like GLAMOUR and TEEN out of our house and kept our bookshelves brimming with exciting literature. We played and listened to great music. With the advent of personal electronic devices and streaming media, things have changed so much.

Thanks for your notes about all this, and for your astute awareness about all that it represents.

What great memories you have from living in Puerto Rico. That's fantastic that he Bad Bunny Super Bowl halftime show recalled them to you and clarified the source of your life of advocacy for equality and justice.
